To Read Gurdjieff’s Writings

It seems as though it should be a simple thing. Gurdjieff wrote books and, if we have any genuine interest in The Work, we should read them. Indeed we should regard the books he wrote as a primary source. But it is not so simple…

No point in beating about the bush: We don’t know how to read.

Yes, we are literate. We can recognize words and we can makes sense of sentences and paragraphs. In this modern world it would be difficult to survive if we were not literate. But still, reading is a skill and few of us have developed that skill at all. Our reading habits are automatic.

For Gurdjieff’s writings, created with a precision that is far beyond even talented writers, we need to develop the skill of reading. And in order to do so, we had better acknowledge that we are poorly skilled in this.
